Let?s get real here: an overwhelming majority of people hate phone calls. In this brave new world of texting, picture messages, and social media, picking up your phone to make an actual phone call is actually one of the more archaic forms of communication. This also hits home on a personal note because much to the chagrin of my counterparts in Boston who we regularly speak with, I think the part I?ve hated the most about communicating with our different editorial teams in the country has been being forced to use awful conference call systems. Between the poor audio quality, being forced to huddle around a single phone like cavemen around a campfire, and the horrendous Kenny G-esque music you?re forced to listen to while you?re put on hold, it?s pretty much one of the things I hate the most about work.?Granted it?s hard to complain about a service that?s essentially free, but the fact of the matter is that nobody has really stepped up to shake up this rather draconic method of communication for conference calls.
That is until now.
Speek?(yes, I spelled it right) is a refreshing take on the concept of conference calls, where as most call websites would make you use a phone number with a corresponding PIN, Speek utilizes a link to your ?call profile? (something like speek.com/carlpierre) so that a simple click can get you started with your phone call. ?From that one link, you can join a call using a normal phone, a laptop, a web browser, SMS, mobile browsers and more. ?You can join the conference call from anywhere in the world, and with the added social media features, share your conference call profile with everybody in your digital network.
Brilliant? You betcha. And here?s a video too.
As if having an amazingly disruptive product wasn?t enough, Speek also boasts an amazing startup team composed of?Danny Boice (Co-Founder, CTO), John Bracken (Co-Founder, CEO), and Virginia Lee (Product Manager). This ace founding team has been able to accomplish a lot in the short span that the startup has been around, including launching a $1 million seed round led by 500 Startups, setting up headquarters in the swanky digs of AOL?s Fishbowl Labs, launching a public beta this past May, and having a rockstar advisory board which include D.C. Tech legends such as Jay Rappaport (first AOL COO, Vonage Pres / COO, Clearslide, ePals) and Minh Nguyen (co-founded Plaxo w/ Sean Parker). Speek has already hit some amazing milestones including reaching over 2 million minutes of voice conference calls to date as well as?boasting thousands of active users for the service which doubles in number every two weeks.
These guys are a big deal, and don?t show any signs of slowing down.
Overall, I can?t wait to see what this amazing team will pull off over the next few months as they continue to grow their round, and I am more than grateful to finally have a nifty product solution to the torturous process of conference calls.
