Beginning Monday morning, students at the University of New England will have a new option when commuting between the Camp Ellis area of Saco and the school's Biddeford campus.
The service is part of the university's effort to reduce its carbon footprint and will take an estimated 90 cars off the road.
The ferry will run for the next three weeks on a trial basis, Monday through Friday.
It is funded by money allocated by the student government for the university's climate action program.
The 18-seater will make rounds during two different time blocks each day. The first is from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The second is from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Rides on the ferry are free of charge for all UNE students, faculty and staff.
The ferry will be the first active ferry service on the Saco River since 1925.
