Stand Aside Bieber, Ashton Kutcher Buys Ritzy L.A. Home

Ashton Kutcher was not about to be outdone by Justin Bieber. With Biebs circling the swank Los Angeles, CA home he had previously been renting like a shark, Kutcher purchased the home. It is unclear how much of the $10.8 million asking price he shelled out for the glass, steel and stone contemporary home that [...]

For Greg MacGillivray, filmmaking is a family business ? Living ...

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. ? Like most veteran filmmakers and directors, Greg MacGillivray?s imagination was lush with visions of how his new project might look. What he didn?t readily picture, when he set out to make the new IMAX documentary ?To the Arctic,? opening Friday, was just how personal that project would get.

For one, every member of his family of four, wife Barbara, son Shaun and daughter Meghan, took part behind the scenes, whether it was on the production side or in projects related to the movie.

Barbara has been his one-woman support system throughout his giant-screen film career, frequently going on location with him and sharing the extreme outdoors adventures that came with the territory. Eight years ago, the couple co-founded the MacGillivray Freeman Films Educational Foundation, which aims to contribute to the conservation of natural and cultural resources through giant screen films and companion educational programming.

His children had grown up watching their dad make documentaries, and as adults, chose to take on roles related to their parents? work ? without prodding or nudging by their dad and mom. Meghan, a writer and chef, heads up the film company?s social media efforts and is penning a cookbook based on sustainable practices, including those that are seafood-related, said MacGillivray, who lives in Laguna Beach.

Meanwhile, ?To the Arctic? is the second film that Shaun has produced for MacGillivray Freeman, having cut his teeth on ?Grand Canyon Adventure,? a tougher and more complex film to produce, MacGillivray said.

Despite having been raised in the documentary film industry, Shaun didn?t jump into it ? he took a serendipitous route. Nor did his dad encourage him to go into the profession, a premeditated decision, albeit a wise one in hindsight.

?Barbara and I never suspected that Shaun would go into film,? MacGillivray said. ?But he grew up in it. We took him with us on location. He was in Europe when he was 2, Indonesia when he was 3, Singapore when he was 4, and so forth.?

As Shaun and Meghan grew up, MacGillivray did not drop any hints that he had hoped that his children would love filmmaking as much as he did, knowing that kids naturally tend to want to find their way in the world without being told by their parents where exactly to go.

?[Shaun] worked in our office from the time he was 10,? MacGillivray said. ?During the summers, both our kids worked half-time at the office, doing different jobs such as working in distribution and post-production. They learned how to get along with people and all that. But he never showed to any great degree a love of making movies until he had gone into college for four years and was an economics major with a film minor. He graduated with honors.?

There was no sudden epiphany about wanting a career in film, Shaun MacGillivray said. ?It was very gradual,? he said. ?I loved being on location and seeing the filmmaking process. I was very observant and it was fantastic watching my dad making these films. From him, I learned how emotional a story can be. I loved to see how a rough cut turns into a fine cut, a fine cut into a really fine cut and then into a finished film. I knew I wanted to do [filmmaking] back in high school ? but I didn?t want to jump into it right away.?

But for Greg MacGillivray, there was a defining moment ? the kind he had quietly and secretly hoped would happen one day. ?We were at Emory in the quad, standing on the grass, and Shaun said to us, ?I?m thinking, I don?t want to be behind the desk all the time and that?s what will happen to me if I?m an economics person.?

?I asked, ?What are you going to do??

??I think that I would like be a filmmaker.?

?Inside me, butterflies were flying, fireworks were going off.??

Shaun went on to study film for three years at University of Southern California and started as a production assistant at MacGillivray Freeman Films. ?He learned in three years at USC what took me 15 years to learn on my own at work,? MacGillivray said.

Working on ?To the Arctic? was an entirely different experience than ?Grand Canyon Adventure? for the MacGillivrays. Four years in the making with a much smaller crew, a desolate location, the film provided them with ample opportunities to continue building a working relationship. During their seventh trip, they found the heart of the movie?s story in Svalbard, Norway ? and they both knew it when they saw it. It was a story of a family ? a mother polar bear which, in the face of a scarce food supply and predators, fought to protect and keep alive her twin cubs.

The mama bear story called for a narrator who was a mother, MacGilllivray said. He conducted a poll of actresses who are mothers to see who ranked highest on the ?motherhood scale.? The list included famous actresses who were frequently in the spotlight, such as Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez. To MacGillivray?s surprise, people picked ? by a landslide ? someone who had already narrated two previous MacGillivray Freeman Films: Meryl Streep.

?Meryl won 10 to 1,? he said.

MacGilllivray found that the poll group was on the mark during one of the days that Streep was scheduled to narrate at a studio. It was the morning after Streep had won the Oscar for best actress. ?I was in the studio and we called Meryl and we were leaving a message for her that we could move the session to the afternoon. Suddenly, I hear behind me, ?I?m here!? and there?s Meryl in studio.? Meryl said she did go to a post-Oscar party with her husband briefly, but decided it was too noisy and went home to celebrate with her family.?

From working with his son to having Meryl Streep narrate again to getting the rights to use the music of an idol from his youth, these are connections that have come together in an unprecedented way for this filmmaker. ?It?s probably the most personal film I?ve done,? he said.

(?To the Arctic? opens April 20 in IMAX theaters.)

Levon Helm, drummer and singer for The Band, dies at age 71 after cancer fight

ALBANY, N.Y. - With songs like "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," ''The Weight" and "Up on Cripple Creek," The Band fused rock, blues, folk and gospel to create a sound that seemed as authentically American as a Mathew Brady photograph or a Mark Twain short story.

In truth, the group had only one American ? Levon Helm.

Helm, the drummer and singer who brought an urgent beat and a genuine Arkansas twang to some of The Band's best-known songs and helped turn a bunch of musicians known mostly as Bob Dylan's backup group into one of rock's most legendary acts, has died. He was 71.

Helm, who was found to have throat cancer in 1998, died Thursday afternoon of complications from cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, said Lucy Sabini of Vanguard Records. On Tuesday, a message on his website said he was in the final stages of cancer.

Helm and his bandmates ? Canadians Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Robbie Robertson and Richard Manuel ? were musical virtuosos who returned to the roots of American music in the late 1960s as other rockers veered into psychedelia, heavy metal and jams. The group's 1968 debut, "Music From the Big Pink," and its follow-up, "The Band," remain landmark albums of the era, and songs such as "The Weight," ''Dixie Down" and "Cripple Creek" have become rock standards.

Early on, The Band backed Dylan on his sensational and controversial electric tours of 1965-66 and collaborated with him on the legendary "Basement Tapes," which produced "I Shall Be Released," ''Tears of Rage" and many other favourites.

Dylan said on his website Thursday: "He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation. This is just so sad to talk about."

Hudson said on his website that he was "terribly sad."

"Thank you for 50 years of friendship and music," he posted. "No more sorrows, no more troubles, no more pain. He went peacefully to that beautiful marvelous wonderful place. ... Levon, I'm proud of you."

The son of an Arkansas cotton farmer, Helm was just out of high school when he joined rocker Ronnie Hawkins for a tour of Canada in 1957 as the drummer for the Hawks. That band eventually recruited a group of Canadian musicians who, along with Helm, spent grueling years touring rough bars in Canada and the South.

They would split from Hawkins, hook up with Dylan and eventually call themselves The Band ? because, as they explained many times, that's what everyone called them anyway.

In some ways, The Band was the closest this country ever came to the camaraderie and achievement of the Beatles. Each of the five members brought special talents that through years of touring, recording and living together blended into a unique sound.

The tall, lanky Robertson was an expert blues-rock guitarist and the group's best lyricist, his songs inspired in part by Dylan and by the stories Helm would tell him of the South. The baby-faced Danko was a fluid bassist, an accomplished singer and occasional writer. The bearish Hudson was a virtuoso and eccentric who could seemingly master any instrument, especially keyboards, while the sad-eyed Manuel's haunting falsetto on "Whispering Pines," ''Tears of Rage" and others led Helm to call him the group's lead singer.

But for many Band admirers, that honour belonged to the short, feisty Helm, whose authoritative twang once was likened to a town crier calling a meeting to order. He not only sang "Dixie Down," he inhabited it, becoming the Confederate Virgil Caine, "hungry, just barely alive," his brother killed by the Yankees, the South itself in ruins. It was the kind of heartbreaking, complicated story and performance that had even Northerners rooting for the proud and desperate Virgil.

"The Weight" and many other songs were true collaborations: Helm's voice was at the bottom, Danko's in the middle and Manuel on top. Helm ? the group's musical leader on stage ? played drums loose-limbed and funky, shoulders hunched and head to the side when he sang.

But the group, especially Manuel, struggled with drugs and alcohol. While Danko and Manuel shared songwriting credits in the early years, Robertson was essentially the lone writer for the last few albums. By the middle of the decade, Robertson, especially, was burned out and wanted to get off the road.

They bid farewell to live shows with a bang with the famous "Last Waltz" concert in 1976. Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Dylan were among the stars who played the show in San Francisco, filmed by Martin Scorsese for a movie of the same name, released in 1978.

"The Last Waltz" is regarded by many as the greatest of concert films, but it also helped lead to a bitter split between Robertson and Helm, once the best of friends.

Robertson became close to Scorsese during the production, and Helm believed the movie was structured to make Robertson the leader and advance his own movie career. They rarely spoke after, despite efforts by Hawkins and others to intervene.

While Helm would accuse Robertson of being on a star trip, Helm, ironically, was the more successful actor, with acclaimed roles in "Coal Miner's Daughter," ''The Right Stuff" and other films. And no one who watched "The Last Waltz" could forget Helm's performance of "Dixie Down," shot mostly in closeup, his face squeezed with emotion.

In his memoir, "This Wheel's on Fire," Helm said some hard feelings about Robertson also included his getting songwriting credits on Band songs that other members considered group efforts. Robertson would deny the allegations. On his Facebook page this week, he revealed that he had been devastated to learn of Helm's illness and visited him in the hospital.

"I sat with Levon for a good while, and thought of the incredible and beautiful times we had together," Robertson wrote.

Without Robertson, The Band reunited in the 1980s but never approached its early success. Manuel hanged himself in a Winter Park, Florida, hotel room in 1986. Danko died in his home near Woodstock in 1999, a day after his 56th birthday.

Highlights from the '90s did include playing at a Dylan tribute concert at Madison Square Garden in 1992 and a collaboration among Helm, Danko and Keith Richards on the rocker "Deuce and a Quarter."

While Helm's illness reduced his voice to something close to a whisper, it did not end his musical career. Beset by debt, in 2004 he began a series of free-wheeling late night shows in his barn in Woodstock that were patterned after medicine shows from his youth. Any night of the bi-weekly Midnight Rambles could feature Gillian Welch, Elvis Costello or his daughter Amy on vocals and violin.

He recorded "Dirt Farmer" in 2007, which was followed by "Electric Dirt" in 2009. Both albums won Grammys. He won another this year for "Ramble at the Ryman."

Original members of The Band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Exercise challenge ? headstand | Health & Fitness

Part of what we enjoy about our exercise challenges, is that they snap you out of your regular routine and get you thinking about developing your dexterity, agility, balance and flexibility. It?s great to be fit, but when you add co-ordination to it, it?s a game changer. Suddenly you move with poise, confidence and a natural flow. Opening up your body so that your movements and energy are more fluid is something that we are going to be working on in our new challenges.

Today we are starting with the headstand. What better way to get you out of your old patterns then to turn your world upside down? :) Don?t get scared, there is a posture for absolute beginners if you have never tried this before.

Before we get going we wanted to go over some of the benefits of this posture.

1. The headstand builds strength in the neck, wrists, shoulders and activates the muscles in the core. It also has spine strengthening benefits.
2. It allows de-oxygenated blood to flow more easily from the far reaches of your body back to the heart.
3. It allows our blood to move more readily into the upper lungs making for more efficient oxygen-blood exchange.
4. It is amazing for improving body balance.
5.You may experience heightened clarity and a greater sense of emotional calm. Some Yogis believe that practicing the headstand helps to keep us emotionally stable, balanced and centred.

This last point is perhaps the most interesting, because it picks up on the theme we discussed in our last post ? that training can help you find peace and balance in all areas of your life. This is never just about the physical :)

As with everything, this and every other skill requires determined practice. The first time that I saw someone doing a headstand I was blown away and thought that this would never be possible for me (fear based thinking is so often our default isn?t it?). It is important to realize that we are capable of so much more when we face our fears of the unknown and realize that for the most part they are just empty thoughts. Yes this is not easy, and yes it requires ongoing practice, but the truth is that very little in life is ever truly impossible :) Enjoy your challenge!

Best,
Zuzana & Freddy

Starting position.

Bring your hips up and extend your legs. This is the posture for beginners. Practice this until you develop

enough strength in your arms and balance to move on to the next step.

Take your feet off of the ground, bend your knees and keep your back straight. This is the intermediate posture.

You can start by practicing this posture with your back against the wall.

Extend your legs up keeping your toes pointed. Every muscle in your body will be working to keep this posture.

This is the advanced and final step.

Another Siri-Like App, Voice Answer, Hits The App Store For Those Of Us Without The iPhone 4S

Screen shot 2012-04-19 at 10.30.53Looks like Apple might be loosening its grip even more on voice recognition apps? Or, it simply just feels that the competition is not as good as its own native Siri. We've just gotten word from Netherlands-based developer Sparkling Apps that its voice-response app, Voice Answer -- rejected by Apple for the nearly three months -- has been approved by Apple and is now live in the App Store, and usable on any iPhone, iPod or iPad running iOS 4.2 or later. It took "almost three months of negotiating, tweaking and pushing," developer Martijn van der Spek tells TechCrunch. Like Siri, the app is based on data from Wolfram Alpha, among other sources, and lets users ask questions by either speaking to the app or typing in a question. It's priced at ?2.49 ($3.99).

'Magic Mike' Trailer: Five Magical Scenes

We strip down the new sneak peek for the best moments of Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and more.
By Kara Warner

Channing Tatum in "Magic Mike"
Photo: Warner Bros.

For those of us who've been dying to see "Magic Mike" since it was announced, Christmas came early Wednesday (April 18) in the form of the film's first official trailer.

For months we've been obsessing over as many details as we could find — from the first official photos to chance encounters with the cast and their hilarious stories of thong mishaps. And now we finally have two minutes of glorious footage to watch over and over again.

Here are the five key scenes in the "Magic Mike" trailer:

Classic Cop Routine
The trailer opens with Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer knocking on the door of a party, dressed as local police officers. "We keep getting complaints of noise and underage drinking," Tatum says in a serious tone to the all-female crowd, before pinning one lady against the wall for further questioning. "Everybody sit down because we're going to be here for a while."

"You don't have anything sharp on you that I can stick myself with, do you?"

"No," says the girl, anxiously.

"Good, because I do," Tatum says saucily before we hear the telltale ripping noise that means he's just expertly exited his uniform.

Channing Busts a Move
Those of us who've been following Tatum's career since his star-making turn in "Step Up" are well aware that the man has moves, and they are on full display in this trailer. We see Tatum working it with a little boy-band choreography, doing some breakdancing, flipping through the air, spinning from the ceiling, etc. It's all in the name of putting on a good show and stripping down to his skivvies, which we don't actually see. "You are the husband they never had," we hear strip-club owner Dallas (Matthew McConaughey) say to Tatum's Magic Mike in voice-over. "You are that dreamboat guy that never came along."

McConaughey Being McConaughey
We are not at all surprised that McConaughey's character Dallas looks right at home onstage, putting it all out there for a bunch of ladies. "The law says you cannot touch, but I see a lot of lawbreakers out there," he says to a squealing crowd, wearing nothing but a cowboy hat, a leather vest and blue jeans, all the while flashing that million-dollar grin of his — not to mention the several quick shots of McConaughey in action as part of the male revue, as well as his own stunt as some kind of fire-breather.

Introducing Cody Horn
Who knew we'd see so much of the female characters in this first spot? The lady who's front and center is Cody Horn, an up-and-coming actress whose work you might have seen on "The Office." Horn is introduced as the girl-next-door/sister to Pettyfer's character, who falls for Mike and attempts to keep him grounded in reality. There are a lot of cute and flirty moments between Horn and Tatum's characters, and it's obvious that Horn's "normal girl" will be the one to eventually convince "Magic Mike" to hang up his stripper shoes and pursue his dreams of going into custom furniture design. Yup, furniture design.

Disappointing Amounts Of Bomer And Manganiello
We're not ones to complain or anything, but because we know exactly how many gorgeous men are in this film's cast, we expected to see a lot more of them in the trailer. There was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot of "True Blood" heartthrob Joe Manganiello hurting his back mid-tease, but it was entirely too short. And where in the heck was blue-eyed cutie Matt Bomer? We're hoping they're holding onto the proverbial goods for unveiling in future teasers.

Check out everything we've got on "Magic Mike."

How Will Kanye West, DJ Khaled Follow 'Way Too Cold'?

'Expect another monstrous earthquake to hit the streets,' Khaled promises MTV News of his next Kanye collabo.
By Rob Markman

DJ Khaled

If you happen to feel the ground shake in the next few months, don't be alarmed: Chances are, you'll just be feeling the after effects of another Kanye West and DJ Khaled single drop.

Originally, Kanye's Kim Kardashian-loving single "Way Too Cold" (originally titled "Theraflu") was slated for the boisterous Cash Money disc jock's upcoming Kiss the Ring LP, but Khaled didn't mind giving Yeezy first dibs because the two have another in the stash.

"Me and Kanye West went back in the lab and we made another record and got some features on there too," Khaled told MTV News after a taping of "Hip Hop Squares," careful not to let too many deets leak. "I can't really talk about it, so expect another monstrous earthquake to hit the streets."

Throughout his career, Khaled has served as a master matchmaker, pairing the likes of Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and T-Pain on an array of high-powered posse tracks like "We Takin' Over" and "Welcome to My Hood." His latest single, "Take it to the Head," groups Weezy, Rozay, Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown, and on his next LP, the charismatic Khaled promises more of the same. "Kiss the Ring is gonna be the real deal," he said.

When it comes to his collaborations with West, Khaled throws all the rules out the window. On "Way Too Cold," the Chi-Town virtuoso not only pissed off PETA by boasting that his mink was draggin' on the floor, he also confessed his love for Kim Kardashian, tossed a nod to Wiz Khalifa and threw a thinly veiled shot at Kardashian's ex-hubby Kris Humphries. The Hit-Boy-supplied beat and Kanye's ear-catching lyrics are what makes the Khaled-assisted track stand out.

"On my end, I got this thing with 'Ye where I tell him there's no rules and there's no regulations. It's no format, and ain't nobody gonna tell us nothing on what we're gonna do," Khaled told MTV News on April 5.

The Miami-based DJ/producer wouldn't say much else about his and Yeezy's next release, but who knows? Maybe he will spill the beans when he appears on today's (April 18) "RapFix Live" with host Sway Calloway.

Catch Future, DJ Khaled and Juvenile on "RapFix Live" today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. Send your questions for the artists to @MTVRapFix!

WD's 1TB VelociRaptor HDD gets reviewed: substantial gains, moderate price

Image

Western Digital has expanded its line of desktop-grade VelociRaptors to include a 1TB model that's available now for $320, but those kidding themselves with that whole "250GB is enough" thing can get in for as little as $160. Top-level specs include a 10,000RPM spindle rate and a SATA 6Gb/s interface housed within a 3.5-inch heat sink -- useful for lessening the burden of the drive's thermal output on the rest of the machine. Storage Review's tests reveal that sequential read and write transfer speeds top out around 206MB/s, thermal dissipation is excellent with low power consumption, and that random access has improved compared with it's 600GB predecessor. They consider the new HDD to be a "very appealing value proposition" and "a blend of high performance, storage, capacity, and low cost."

Hot Hardware discovered virtually identical numbers with their tests, but wasn't quite as forgiving when it comes to the cost-per-GB versus 7200RPM hard drives. However, they call this VelociRaptor the "fastest HDD yet" at "nearly double the capacity of previous" model. You can find even more stats and impressions to chew on at the sources below.

Robo-guard the South Korean correction service robot says 'stay out of trouble' (video)

Robo-guard the South Korean correction service robot says 'stay out of trouble' (video)
It sounds like the sequel that didn't even make it to DVD: RoboCop's jaded, rotund, less attractive younger brother, who never made the police force -- and tired of living in his sibling's shadow -- took a job as the next best thing: a prison guard. Well, that might not make the silver screen, but it's certainly reality TV. Meet Robo-guard, the world's first robotic correctional officer. Developed in South Korea, Robo-guard is equipped with 3D cameras that let it observe inmates, while special software looks out for changes in behavior. Should anything suspicious be detected, he'll raise the alarm. A lone wolf, he works his beat autonomously, but can also be controlled manually via an iPad, if human colleagues want to check what's going down. Initial field trials are under way right now, and if all goes well, he'll earn a place in more prisons. Who knows, he may even make deputy one day.

Death To The Gatekeepers: Bezos Talks Innovation In The Publishing Space

scaledwm-3251The heart of Jeff Bezos' mission has always to circumvent the traditional "gatekeepers" of commerce. He started with books, an industry ripe for disruption, and moved onto, well, everything else. At this point, his vision has come true. The old gatekeepers in the book sales cycle are on the ropes and electronics companies are already planning to collude in order to maintain a "minimum" accepted price, thereby ensuring Amazon doesn't eat all of their lunch. But Amazon is hungry and, like Plainview, they have a long straw. They won't just eat the world's lunch, they'll drink its milkshake, too.

Khloe Kardashian Refutes Miscarriage Rumor, Loves Kanye West

Khloe Kardashian sat in with the ladies of The Talk yesterday and set the record straight regarding the latest tabloid rumor: she has never suffered a miscarriage.

"I'm only laughing because it's so ridiculous," Khloé said on the CBS gabfest. "I typically don't address a lot of the tabloids because 90 percent of what they write is false. But when you talk about someone having a miscarriage, that's so personal and so hurtful… That's such bad karma - is that how much you guys need to sell magazines?"

Even we must agree with the reality star on this one. Low blow, In Touch Weekly.

But what about the chatter that's growing louder everyday: is sister Kim Kardashian really dating Kanye West?!?

"Kanye's been a family friend of ours forever," Khloé said, beating around the publicized bush. "And I love Kanye. I think he is an amazing person. He is, truly, so sweet. I think sometimes he gets a bad rep in the media, but he's always been a great friend to Kim and to all of us."

Fortunately, Kardashian was a bit more forthcoming when asked if Britney Spears would make a good X Factor judge. Watch her respond to that question in the following video:

'Cabin In The Woods', 'Three Stooges', And More: Double Feature Friday!
